As We Grow Older

Ps 37:25 says, “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” None of us like to admit we are old but once in a while we will admit that we are getting older. Note some things that are true as we grow older.
I. There Is Consolation
Note what the Psalmist said in our text verse. He says as an old man, “Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken nor his seed begging bread.” Many years have passed in his life and yet he had not seen one righteous person forsaken. The word for “forsaken” has the idea of “abandonment.” God's people do not have to be beggars. According to the Bible we are kings and priests unto God (Rev. 1:6). The faithfulness of God brings great consolation to His redeemed saints!
II. There Is A Relation
According to Jn. 1:12, when we are saved by God's grace, a relationship is established with the Lord. So many people go into their older years with no relationship with God through His Son Jesus. It is wonderful to know the Lord and realize that we have many relations on the earth. We have a host of brothers and sisters who will stand by us when the physically declining years come our way. Thank God for all of our spiritual family.
III. There Is A Fixation
In Psm. 57:7 the Psalmist said, “My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed.” The Hebrew word for “fixed” means “prepared.” It has the idea of having the firmest purpose through God's strength, by which we can do all things (Phil. 4:13). It is good to have purpose for living even in the last years of our lives. That helps get us through difficult and perplexing times. I am glad I can testify, sing and tell others that God has done something permanent and wonderful in my life!
IV. There Are Frustrations
Read Eccl. 12:3-5. He tells us teeth become few, our eyesight is diminished, sleep escapes us, and even the grasshopper (as light as it is) becomes a burden. Those things do become a bit frustrating. But we have to realize those days are only for a while and that it is far better farther on (Phil. 1:23). The Lord can give us contentment even in the midst of our frustrations and disappointments (Phil. 4:11).
V. There Will Be A Translation
To “translate” in regard to the Christian means to “carry over.” The Bible says in Hebrews 11:5, “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him.” Every saint young and old has a translation to look forward to (Read 1 Thess. 4:13-18).
